Personally, I like to do clean installs when I upgrade, and I partition my disks so I've got, at a minimum, a /boot partition, two linux bootable partitions, and maybe some windows partitions, depending on the machine. Of course the backends also have partitions for recordings and videos that are mounted by both linux bootable partitions. Having two linux bootable partitions makes it easier to upgrade. I can install a new O/S and test, and switch back to the old O/S if need be. Seems there's always some configuration detail I forget about and need to refer to on the old O/S whenever I upgrade.
