As a fellow Gentoo user, I would suggest getting the direct MythTV
portage feed, instead of staying on portage for this one.  I don't have
the instructions on me at the moment, but there has been a fair amount
of talk about 0.24 in the forums, and you can find the links there.  I'm
currently running "media-tv/mythtv-0.24.1_p20111116" this way, and am
reasonably happy and quite stable.

It's not an overlay, it's a separate way of handling an overlay-like
setup.  But it's not bad to set up - the instructions are decent enough.
