Thanks, Mike.  As usual, you put me on the right track.  Turned out there were two things wrong.  I'm running the backend as a system daemon (under Mac OS X launchd), and I'd screwed up specifying the HOME.  I think it was creating a new config.xml each time I started up.  And on the first page of the MythTV-Setup General settings, I needed to put in the assigned ip address in both the slave and master boxes.  (I'm pretty sure I haven't done that in the past--but then I haven't made changes to my backend for years!)
