I don't have an answer to your specific situation, but maybe something
you can get to work easily.

I use the universal remote that came with my Onkyo home theater
system. I'm basically using the standard Onkyo DVD codes. Once I
figured out LiRC it was pretty easy. I recorded every single button
that worked in DVD mode on the remote (which includes a nifty joystick
for up/down/left/right) and then assigned them appropriately in Myth.

I'm using a standard serial IR receiver and it works surprisingly well.
