i'll give that theory a check next time the FE is on - see what it is
compared to the renamed old version (i simply renamed it to
.ICEAuthority.old)

worth knowing, but this is an out-of-the-box mythbuntu install - with
the sole purpose of an FE.
unless there is some background task at play here, then i don't
believe it's something i'm doing myself

not knowingly, no. while i do typically use 'sudo', this is a
dedicated mythfrontend machine, so it's only purpose is for mythtv. i
dont recall using sudo recently. gui programs i tend to use via vnc,
program install (eg, bonnie++, or smartmontools) would be via SSH sudo
apt-get.
