Which version of MythTV are you using?  This last part (defunct 
processes) sounds like what happened in 0.23 with udevinfo/udevadm 
changes, and it shouldn't happen on 0.24+ unless you don't have udev 
(specifically libudev) on your system or you're using a build that 
wasn't built against libudev (i.e. because you compiled yourself but 
didn't install udev development headers--or the packager is compiling it 
without libudev headers).  (And, really, in unstable/development code, 
it wouldn't even happen then, but that's another story...)
