Many homes these days have a centralized surge suppressor wired into the main circuit breaker box. I wonder if that might 
cause problems.

Or is the problem caused by the suppressor being between the two devices that are trying to communicate?

I'd guess that perhaps the suppressor shunts the high-frequency (well, higher than 60 Hz.) data carrier, in which case the 
central one would shunt the carrier to ground, but if there's enough impedance to the carrier in the wiring between the 
device and the central box, things would probably be OK.

But again, all I can do is try it I guess.
