There's some talk in that linked thread of a setting to avoid conflicts
between live tv and recordings, but I couldn't seem to find much info on
what that does. One thing I might have seen is that it will start using
the tuners from the bottom up for Live TV if enabled? In which case on
my system (after reconfiguring as above), if I go into live TV it would
use tuner 4 (on tuner 2), then another frontend tuner 3 (on tuner 1)?
If a recording would then be due to start, would it attempt to use tuner
1, and in doing so pop up the "a recording is about to start, what do
you want to do?" box on the frontend using tuner 3?

Thanks,
James.

Yes your description is correct. Not sure if you get the pop up if the recording is on the same MUX as the live-TV.

I am no expert on this, just trying to explain in general how this works.

As long as you have less physical tuners than "max simultaneous recordings" plus ""max simultaneous live-TV sessions" then the ordering of physical tuners versus virtual tuners will be a tradeoff between efficient use of tuners for recording and maximum flexibility for live-TV.

I would guess that the following setup would be a reasonbly good tradeoff :

Enabled "Avoid conflicts between LiveTV and recordings".

Physical tuner 1
Virtual tuner 2 (on physical tuner 1)
Virtual tuner 3 (on physical tuner 1)
Physical tuner 4
Virtual tuner 5 (on physical tuner 4)
Virtual tuner 6 (on physical tuner 4)
Virtual tuner 7 (on physical tuner 1)
Virtual tuner 8 (on physical tuner 4)

This would give multiple recordings on card 1 if on the same multiplex and and reduce the probability of conflicts between recordings and live-TV since the first live-TV session will be allocated to a tuner on the card that is less likely to be used for recordings. But then again I am no expert on this and this setup may have unwanted sideeffects that am not aware of.

Jens
