    Short of something that is VERY expensive and can only be installed by some
factory blessed technician, I am not sure if there is anything else out there
that is comparable to MythTV. Certainly once you include the little "tweaks" that 
are possible, the idea that you could just buy something off the shelf seems less 
likely.

    The software bits are interesting and hard to replicate with ready made gear.

    Although it's easy to save time with pre-built hardware.

    My first franken-box frontend died prematurely due to poor component selection. Beyond the 
fact that the first frontend died, WAF was very high. The DVD jukebox potential of MythVideo was
a very big hit and the UI was in general well liked and considered an improvent over Tivo. Infact,
we tried to use the old Tivo for awhile after that first frontend died and everyone agreed that
MythTV was much better.

    I was directed to "stop being cheap and just get a mini like I should have to begin with".
