You probably need to disable compositing in your xorg.conf file. I use
Gnome, no compiz or other fancy special effects window manager, and I
still need to disable it in xorg.conf to get tear-free playback. Run:
$ sudo nvidia-xconfig --no-composite
Then restart X (or reboot).
