I have a similar setup that works for me, but I am using the suggestion at:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU#CPU_Frequency_Scaling

I'm not sure if that is any better than using the "performance"
setting you mentioned.

My setup is a PVR-500 and an HVR-1800, outputting to a Nvidia 8600
