PAL is a 4:3 broadcast format.  Your recordings may be 16:9 content, but 
they are letterboxed (black bars) by the broadcaster to make the video 
4:3.  There is no way to remove those bars from the recordings.  The 
best you can do is to use one of the zoom modes to push those bars 
outside the visible limits of your screen.

MythTV will now automatically detect those black bars, and adjust the 
zoom mode to compensate.
