Solved.  I needed to go into the playback section of the TV settings
setup menu and change the video playback profile to high quality.  It
looks good :-)

The only remaining video display problem are a set of annoying lines
along the bottom of the screen.  I suspect this is the closed captioning
data.  Is there any way to blank this out?
