My recommendation is do whatever works best for you...

I like to have all the features directly available within MythTV so
users don't have to mess with complicated Alsa settings.

I will add an advanced settings so you can set to use mythtv downmixer
for all audio type rather than the current mix of using libavcodec
downmixer and mythtv..

it should provide a more consistent output..
