OK, I realize that you were talking about the real value in the context
of this specific video-driver-related thread, but I'm going to expand on
it a bit.

The real value of Mythbuntu against plain Ubuntu+MythTV is that a team
of dedicated people have spent a great deal of their own free time
keeping up with what's changing in MythTV /and/ in Ubuntu and learning
how to properly configure Ubuntu so that MythTV will work best within
it. While you could choose to spend your time duplicating their
efforts, doing so places the responsibility for figuring things out
/and/ keeping up with changes at your own feet. And, if you choose to
figure out how to set up MythTV on plain Ubuntu--including configuration
of the MythTV and underlying distro--when you finish, you'll end up with
Mythbuntu.

OK, you may end up with Mythbuntu without some of the nice configuration
tools, but for all practical purposes, there's little difference between
your properly-configured Ubuntu+MythTV and Mythbuntu--with the exception
of all the time you'll have to spend to keep up with changes to MythTV
and Ubuntu as you update MythTV or the distro or both.

IMHO, choosing to run Mythbuntu when you want to run MythTV on Ubuntu is
about the same as choosing to use Ubuntu versus just downloading the
source code to every piece of a system (from kernel to shells to every
application--everything) and figuring out how to compile everything and
put it together into a system. All you're doing is ignoring the work
someone else has already done to figure out how things should be done
and doing it yourself (/and/ taking responsibility for any mistakes you
make in the process)--it's a huge waste of time. And, really, if you
feel they've done something wrong, you can reconfigure the Mythbuntu
system how you like, so...

Just my opinion.

Mike
