I have a 3.0GHz P4 HT in a laptop as a combined FE/BE, and it is too
"old" to play most (Austrlian) HD broadcasts...

However, it has an ATI legacy card so I use the open source drivers.

With only one disk it was too slow for any HD stream, now with a second
internal 7200rpm IDE HD it can play Seven's HD stream, the others are
still jerky.

I'm hoping that by tweaking the filesystem further (it's all ext3) and
refining mysql a bit, it will be fast enough for the other HD streams.

I think for you it will come down to your video card, since 1.6GHz is
quite a bit less than 3.0GHz!

second HD, filesystem, maybe. Since this is FE only, this may not help
you.

playback.

tuner cards don't always assist with playback, many have no hardware
mpeg2 or 264 assistance at all. It's probably your video card that will
be the final deciding factor...
