My first setup was with a Matrox G???.  It worked, sort of.  No
acceleration, and the matrox had real trouble with over/under scan; the
resulting image was barely usable.

The Matrox does support VGA or SVGA or some such; just plug it in and have
X autodetect it and use it as a regular vga card.  It will work, just
barely, for SD.  Won't do HD at all.
