I tried the MythTV for Windows player and it plays all of my recordings 
over the network.  The web site stated that it didn't comunicate with 
the myth database, just the backend on port 6543, so it looks like it is 
myth version agnostic.  The one thing that it does not do is 
deinterlace.  Not quite an ideal solution.

I did some more experimentation with VLC and found that it will play 
some recordings and not others.  The only pattern I could find was NBC 
and PBS would play, FOX and CBS would not.
