William -- thanks much.  For some reason, I must not have tried that 
exact thing.

That seems to be (more or less) doing what I want in the short term.

I think something that might be nice to make sure you don't get too 
swamped with excess shows in a situation like mine is to say something 
like "only check for duplicates in previous recordings *on this 
channel*" or something to that effect.

That may be way too specific for most users, though.

The point is that if your system is work stably and you don't have 
listings problems, this shouldn't really be an issue.

Anyway, thanks again for your suggestion - I think I'm in a better 
situation than I was before.
