I'm hopeful I've just been tuning SD channels since I've had the box and
that'd explain the poor quality. (90% of what I watch is OTA, so this
hasn't been a huge issue). I'll check the setting tonight and see where
that takes me.

IIRC, I had configured the H21 to only output to 720p. I recently
changed it back to native and enabled all resolution options.

Correct, I'm changing channels on the H21 via its HTTP server. I had
been using a USB/serial connection previously. The component output is
hooked to a HD-PVR and the other outputs are all disconnected. My
DirecTV boxes are in my basement, which is nice for hiding them from
sight, but less handy for testing.
