I didn't know about those device files, but checking them, it looks like 
the user running the frontend would have read and write access:

[george at pegasus ~]$ ls -alh /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195,   0 Nov 26 19:02 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 195, 255 Nov 26 19:02 /dev/nvidiactl
