I spoke too soon. I just tried to play some music and got this,

followed by the frontend crashing...
if i then try and go into the settings the AC3/DTS check boxes are
missing and if i do a scan and try and manually enter alsa:hw:1,7
I get this in the log

audio configuration

a reboot seems to fix it. this happens anytime I kill the frontend,
the sound stops working, with Myth showing this in the log when it
starts back up,
