thx Mike that was it, my Qt did not have fontconfig properly enabled.
I've fixed that and recompiled and now it's looking much better, thx
for the porinter!  but in the great tradition of give and take, vdpau
has stopped working.  yay!  :D

ok off to find out wtf that's all about.
