As an aside I need to mention that my arrays won't actually assemble
properly at boot if I mark them as type fd (i.e. Linux RAID auto-detect)
because of weird interference between the in-kernel RAID detection code
and the initrd's RAID detection and assembly attempts using mdadm.
By "not assembling properly" I mean that the array members are
misdetected. For example, a disk that contains two partitions, each of
which are of type fd and are indeed members of (different) arrays might
itself be detected as an array member. That's the whole disk, not any
partition on it.
I can fix the above problem by making no other changes than setting the
partitions to type 83.
My recommendation is therefore to steer clear of partition type fd and
to ensure that your initrd contains what is required to assemble your
arrays. Note that the system on which I experienced the above issues
boots from RAID1 using grub2.
