They are probably trying to reduce support calls from unhappy customers, 
by trying to have the device figure out what it is the customer wants.

Of course they are making a total botch if it, mostly because neither 
the manufacturer or the customer actually knows what the customer 
actually wants.

Tech writers, to actually explain what the product will do, are even 
more expensive than people to answer support calls, so of course this 
idea is tossed out immediately.


As home video equipment gets more and more technical, the users need to 
be more and more educated, something that simply can't be done by trying 
to have the TV set do the thinking for the user.
