I know it sounds like that, but I'm using the same display that before
the 0.24 upgrade that gave me crushed blacks unless I didn't have
vdpaustudio set. I've changed nothing else in my system.

I've also tried removing the vdpaustudio filter. That improves the
blacks but gives a little too much contrast overall, and I still
don't get the perfect picture I had with 0.23.1.

I agree, and I have them turned off in the frontend settings, but
they still work. I thought that was suspicious and might be connected.
