OMG, that's ridiculous. Thanks for getting my on the right track.  
Actually, the amp doesn't have any soundfield settings or speaker  
switches. And it just has lights to diplay incoming DD and DTS audio.  
Those always worked as expected.

But I have found some hidden setting called decode mode. It was set to  
allow multi-channel audio to pass through, and to upmix  
2-channel-audio. Obviously this mode is kind of broken. Once I  
switched it to not do any processing at all, and just use those  
speakers that are steered by the audio's channels, the rear channels  
work again. I probably no longer have upmixed output when playing  
audio CDs, but that's still better than broken sound processing.

Thanks for the patience and the final hint. Maybe this can help others  
too. It's a Sony amp fwiw.
