Yea I was going to say the same.  An actual delete in ext3 of a large
file can take as long as 15 seconds or more, which is plenty long
enough to cause IO errors if you don't have slow deletes turned on in
mythtv, but I've never heard of any file system taking any time to
actually free up the space.

By the way, just to clear up one thing with ext4:  ext4 can delete
files almost instantly with extends enabled, but *only* on the files
created when it was an ext4 file system.  Any files that are from a
conversion from ext3 to ext4 take just as long to delete as they did
in ext3.  I waited until all my old recordings were gone before I shut
off slow deletes.
