[mythtv-users] HD-PVR & Live TV

I'm in my 5th month of my conversion to Linux. Having some troubles setting up a MythTV system and hoping for a push in the right direction from one of you fine folks. My equipment details are below.

I'm trying to get HD-PVR working for recording and live TV. From what I've heard, this is one of the most difficult setups to configure. I think I will have the most success with compiling my own MythTV install as I believe there are some patches that need to be applied that I read about on the wiki. I'm writing to the group because as someone new to this, its difficult to decipher the age of some of the materials I've come across in the wiki's the forums, and the mail archives and whether or not they're still necessary in newer versions of Ubuntu and MythTV.

I have recordings working outside of myth with excellent audio and video in mplayer but I can't play anything inside of myth. Hoping someone can point me to the necessary patches and some good advice?
Thanks in advance!

Oh - also not sure how exactly to use the channel change scripts 'directv.pl' that allow me to control the stb over serial using serial to us cables. I have versions 1.7 and 1.9 of the scripts just not sure how to call them and what commands / options to issue.

Here's my setup:
Intended Purpose - backed + 1 of 3 front ends + web server
2.4 GHz Quad Core x64
EVGA 680i mobo
8 gigs RAM
Nvidia GTS 8800 x640 video card
Ubuntu 10.04 Server x64 with LAMP + gnome desktop
HD-PVR 1212
DirecTV stb D-11
