If irw works as expected, I'd wager the problem is that lirc 0.8.6
moved the lirc daemon socket from /dev/lircd to /var/run/lirc/lircd,
and your frontend is still configured to connect to the old location.
There's a config option somewhere in the frontend setup to change the
location. In an ideal world, mythtv wouldn't be connecting directly to
the socket, but instead using the lirc client libs (like xine does),
but there are some legacy reasons behind it...
