I had a similar issue with my backend locking up hard occasionally when 
the HD-PVR was scheduled to record.  I eventually tracked it back to my 
serial IR.  I switched over to the latest drivers that supported the 
built-in IR on the HD-PVR and I've not experience a lock-up since.
