Maybe a little OT, but I had the same problem in gnome and it was
solved using compizconfig-settings-manager. Under "Workarounds" I
checked "Legacy fullscreen support" and next time I restarted
myth-frontend, it covered the panels.
That way I can have my cake and eat it too.
