it seems like it should work without much headache unless the one you
received is simply defective.

In Mythbuntu control centre, do you have Windows MCE Remote
(New-Phillips) selected?
If so, does the remote show up in lsusb and/or dmesg?  If so, try out
either irw (which requires lircd running) or irrecord (which is used
with lircd stopped).
