So I changed the directory name from /var/lib/mythtv/music into / and scanned for new music. This went on at least two hours and nothing was found. When I start the system I boot it from  ubuntu 2.6.31.-14-generic so this must be my distro. Can you help me further?

I don't think your USB stick will be /dev/sda6, since it would have to
have 6 pattitions on it. Also it cannot be mounted on /. So it's
time to stop guessing and work out where your USB stick really is and
whether it's mounted.

What does,

$ cat /proc/partitions

tell you. It's usually possible to recognise the USB stick from its size.
