2) I would personally call the Lirc auto generator from MythBuntu a great
tool for getting you started but you still need to double-check it.
To answer the question - what happens when you run 'sudo irw' and then press
buttons on the remote? If you get an error starting irw try making sure to
stop the lirc daemon - 'sudo /etc/init.d/lirc stop'.
