Why would you need this?

On most modern distribution, there is no need for a asoundrc or a
/etc/asound.conf

This digital audio guide isn't applicable for 0.23 ; lots of things
have changed (for the better I hope)

Ok, so your audio device is card 0 device 3.

so set your audio device in the MythtV -> Setup -> General -> Audio as:
ALSA:plughw:0,3

Check the audio passthrough device to be the same.

Set speakers configuration as 5.1

Check DTS and AC3

that's all should should need

And remove the ~/.asoundrc and your /etc/asound.conf
