Yeah, 50% fail rate seems to be extremely high to me as well.  I'm
seeing nowhere near that with 2-3 dozen consumer grade disks running
24/7 in various RAID arrays in Linux boxes over the past 10 years.
Failure rate is less than 5% (about one disk failure per year).

But we also run regular smart test and full read tests as well.
