I have an early generation HD tv set - specifically, a Samsung
TX-P3271H - http://www.samsung.com/us/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=02010400&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=TX-P3271H
This is a 4:3 tv set.
It has a built in tuner which can do 1080i.
It claims a native resolution of 1080i / 480p - I also found something
on a product sheet which claims a "maximum of 800 lines horizontal
resolution" - but that doesn't actually make a lot of sense to me.
When watching HD with the built-in tuner, it puts black bars on top
and bottom, as expected.
Using the latest nVidia drivers, hooked up to the DVI port, nVidia
auto-detects a whole slew of supported resolutions. Its suggested
"native" size is 1280x720 -> a 16x9 resolution.
All of the hi-res choices that it gives me are 16x9, rather than 4x3
(except for some really low resolutions, which the tv doesn't handle
well)
So then when I try to watch a 1080i show using myth, it sees that the
show wants 16x9, and it thinks the tv is 16x9... and it displays it
filling the entire 4x3 screen - which stretches the content
vertically. None of the fill or mode options in myth that I have
found correct this.
Anyone run into anything like this? Any idea how to put a mode-line
together that might result in reasonable behavior?
Alternatively, is there a way to make myth aware of the oddness going
on, so it can correct for it?
Strangely, certain commercials in HD look perfect... they get a black
bar top and bottom. I don't get that either.
Thanks,
Dan
