Florian,

Assuming  the default upscaling algorithm is something like bilinear
interpolation*, you can only specify a higher quality upscaler when
using OpenGl or VDPAU for video playback.

If you are using Linux, Windows or Mac and OpenGl for video then add
'openglbicubic' to the custom filter section of the display profile.
If you are using Linux and VDPAU for video and have a card with the
correct feature support then add 'vdpauhqscaling' to the custom
filters.

Both options have a performance penalty.

* - certain cards/drivers etc may actually use a higher quality algo
but I've not come across anything that was explicitly or obviously
anythinh other than bi-linear.
