To try to avoid confusion, MPEG-4 is an umbrella standard/term and
includes H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 Part 10) and Xvid/DivX (MPEG-4 ASP,
MPEG-4 Part 2) [1].

H.264 can be decoded by all VDPAU-supported graphics chips (those
supporting feature sets A, B,or C). Xvid/DivX requires a graphics chip
supporting feature set C, which means a Geforce 200M series chip [2].
Ion chipsets only support feature set B, which will explain the OP's
problems.
