Kevin, I just set up HD-PVR last week and had the same firmware message.
Follow the WIKI closely, live TV requires leaving starting channel
blank.
Try to power down device and remove input power and USB connection, then
plug in power, push power button and wait. When amber light goes out
plug in USB. Schedule a recording and watch for amber and top blue
light.
