I went and dug out the manual for the Denon AVR-3801.
You are right, it will not do 7.1 except via the analog inputs.
It WILL however do 6.1 (runs both back speakers with the same signal).
The manual only admits to being able to do 6.1 with DTS-ES, but KQED is sending a signal that the reciever thinks is Dolby
Digital and the receiver thinks has a back channel to make it 6.1.
I suppose I could run an analog connection, but the bundle of cables is already 2 inches in diameter.
