[mythtv-users] Remote Secondary Backend

My Myth setup is spread across two locations.
I have a primary backend with 4 clients connected to it at my house.
I have a friend with a secondary backend approx 1km away connected via a WiFi link. We have a stable 24Mbps link which supports watching TV no problems at all. We also use the link for a shared internet connection and telephone calls. We both have large video and music collections that we share.
My friend has 3 clients at his end.
My problem is that the 3 clients at his end connect to my server and stream TV from my box, this is really not ideal because if a show was recorded at his end, it is pulling it in two directions over the link.
We would like to setup our system so that it uses the minimum bandwidth possible.
I have tried using NFS shares mounted on his backend so the clients stream via NFS but it's a little glitchy, I've tried every permutation and combination of nfs settings but it just doesn't seem like its geared up for streaming media over remote links like this. When I set his clients to stream all traffic over the link using a direct Mythtv connection, its actually smooth with no glitches, its just it's a total waste of bandwidth and very inefficient.
We use storage groups so that shows he wants to record are kept locally and vice versa, I have a Pay TV connection and the way it is setup is for Pay TV shows he records, will be saved down to his backend based on storage group preference.
Its all working very well apart from the client streaming side of things.
I briefly changed to SSHFS to link the servers together which was stable but it does not support multiple things happening at the same time very well.
NFS works fine, but is just a little too glitchy.
What I really want is to be able to connect his clients to his secondary backend so that the media is streamed using the Mythtv protocol via his backend.
Is this at all possible?
Are there any other tricks anyone can recommend for me to give this a go. I feel I'm so close to a workable system.
Thanks
Toby
