Not 100% sure but i think you'd run it with the option -ac faad,

To get a complete list of supported audio codecs

mplayer -ac help

(you can also put it as the default in ~/.mplayer/config or system
wide in /etc//mplayer/mplayer.conf, a line like

ao=faad,
