Looks like x is borken. Video overheated?
Do HP laptops have the <somekey>+Fn key combo to toggle through display 
resolutions?
Can you Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a terminal, log in, and look at Xorg.0.log and/or 
dmesg for clues?
