[mythtv-users] idle shutdown/suspend on front-end

1) Sorta. You set your system up to run MythWelcome. In
MythWelcome's "I" (eye) set-up menu, there is a checkbox to have
MythWelcome automatically start MythFrontend. If you choose *not* to
check the box, (recommended state for the BE -- see later in this
description) then you use the space or enter key ("OK" on my remote)
to launch MythFrontend. Exiting MythFrontend takes three keystrokes
(or button presses on the remote) from the top level menu, 1: either
left-arrow or escape, 2: down-arrow, and then 3: either the space or
enter key. This puts you back in MythWelcome. MythWelcome works with
MythShutdown (if you configure everything right) to shut just that
system down when it is idle. If this is an FE and the the BE is A)
separate, B) also configured with MythWelcome and MythShutdown, and C)
busy doing Myth work (e.g. recording shows, commflagging, serving
another FE...) the BE will not shut down until it is idle and a user
specified time delay (oddly not in the MythWelcome settings but in the
MythSetup settings) has elapsed. You can even roll your own script to
check other things to prevent the system from shutting down when
non-Myth work is active ( e.g. check for remote login ttys and not cut
them off at the knees).

2) As long as MythFrontend is running, the system is "busy". If only
MythWelcome is running, the system is fair game for automatic
shutdown.

3) Using the shutdown menu option from MythWelcome only shuts that
system down -- if it's a standalone FE, the BE isn't forced down. See
above for how to automate the shutdown of the BE.

4) Unlike Chris, I don't mind pressing a few extra keys -- beats
having to run up/down stairs to get from the FE to the BE and shut it
down, too. ;-)

Craig.
