...besides it all turning into a big mess and leaving you wishing you had an 
entirely separate room to act as a dedicated nothing-else-but-machines sort of 
server room, nothing really.

   OTOH, having slave recorders next to TVs mean that you've got a manual
override for your TV setup should you ever think you need it. Otherwise, 
stuff just chugs along by itself not being bothered necessarily and looking
much like any other set of wires and components under a TV.

   I went to a distributed setup myself after I had a centralized one and
decided it wasnt' all it was cracked up to be.

   Recievers, KVM switches, IR blasters, serial control cables, excessively
long component cables, long runs of coax...
