Douglas I could kiss you! (but I won't, my wife says the stubble grown
during my time wrestling with this problem is too scratchy) 
You knocked over the first domino for me and the rest fell in turn.
All the info was right there in front of me but that forum post pointed
it out...

...it was the "sudo -H" that I was using. That is the second time it has
tripped me up, the first being when for some reason you had to add
it ;-)

I removed the -H from the MythWelcome settings and I got the exact same
result as your forum post link.
Then I went into the backend settings and removed the -H and the sudo
(since you can run mythshutdown without sudo apparently) and bingo it
worked.
