I experimented at one time with defining a resolution and frequencies
for 1080p output,
the display showed '1080p' as the input format, but the result was
always excessive overscan.

When I use the correct panel resolution and frequencies, the display
shows 'PC' as the input
format, and displayed without any overscan.

What is your TV? Model? Native Resolution? Unless something is wrong
with your EDID,
a custom modeline will very rarely prove advantageous.

Can you run "X :0 -probeonly -logverbose 6" and post the output? On
Ubuntu, output
will probably go to /var/log/Xorg.0.log

BTW, I used an NVIDIA card, so it mostly took care of all the resolution
and timing
transparently, and did a very good job. You might consider upgrading
unless you are
particularly fond of ATI for some reason.
