Well maybe this is part of the problem.  There was no /lib/firmware
directory, and accordingly no hardware.conf in it.  I got a suggestion from
John Welch who installed this and got it working by inserting the
wiki-specified code into /etc/sysconfig/lirc (his reply here
http://mythtv.org/pipermail/mythtv-users/2010-January/278205.html).

So does this command have to be run in a startup script for normal operation
of the HDPVR? Or is it only needed to run the command line irsend command?

I'm using exactly what's linked in the wiki, i.e.
http://www.blushingpenguin.com/mark/lmilk/lircd.conf which apprently others
like John have used with success.
